=>Chagos dispute resolved:  the United Kingdom stated that it would cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

The islands are located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, where the UK has jointly operated the strategically important Diego Garcia military base with the United States.

The base on the largest island of Diego Garcia was built after the local people of the islands were forcibly removed. This has been the subject of controversy for several decades.

=>New president of Sri Lanka: Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been elected as Sri Lanka’s next president after he won the debt-ridden country’s first election since its economy collapsed in 2022.

=>Ibrahim Skandar is the new Malasia king: Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar ascended the throne as Malaysia’s 17th king on Saturday (20 July) during an elaborate coronation ceremony in the National Palace.

Sultan Ibrahim hails from the southern state of Johor whose sultanate can be traced back to the 16th century.

Malaysia practices a unique rotational form of monarchy, in which the heads of the country’s nine royal families take turns to be king for a five-year reign.

While the monarchy plays a mostly ceremonial role in Malaysia, its influence has expanded in recent times, prompting the King to invoke rarely-used discretionary powers to address political instability and maintain order.

Zimbabwe launches new currency ZiG in attempt to resolve money crisis. Zimbabwe on Tuesday started circulating a new currency to replace one that has been battered by depreciation and often outright rejection by the people. The ZiG was introduced electronically in early April, but people are now able to use banknotes and coins.

=>Vlamidir Putin: Russian President Vladimir Putin, 71, won the recent Presidential elections by securing 87.97 percent of the votes, results declared on Sunday (March 17) showed. With a six-year term set to follow, he will become Russia’s longest-serving leader in more than 200 years.
