Infrastructure Boost in India 2024
=>Semiconductor Manufacturing Units: India now has four semiconductor manufacturing facilities after the inclusion of the three new units. Prominent American chip company Micron has committed to invest up to US$825 million to build a facility in India for the assembly and testing of semiconductor chips.
The three new semiconductor manufacturing units are as follows:
- Semiconductor Fab with 50,000 wfsm capacity – at Dholera, Gujarat
- Semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging) unit – at Morigaon, Assam
- Semiconductor ATMP unit for specialized chips – at Sanand, Gujarat =>Biggest floating solar project of North India: The largest floating solar project in central and north India, generating 90 MW of energy, has been commissioned at Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh.
=>India-Middle East-Europe Corridor:
Recently, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) Project was signed at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, which holds significant geopolitical and economic implications for India.
- The project forms part of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII). PGII is a values-driven, high-impact, and transparent infrastructure partnership to meet the enormous infrastructure needs of low and middle-income countries.
- The proposed IMEC will consist of Railroad, Ship-to-Rail networks and Road transport routes extending across two corridors, that is,
- The East Corridor – connecting India to the Arabian Gulf,
- The Northern Corridor – connecting the Gulf to Europe.
- The IMEC corridor will also include an electricity cable, a hydrogen pipeline and a high-speed data cable.
- The proposed IMEC will consist of Railroad, Ship-to-Rail networks and Road transport routes extending across two corridors, that is,
=>World's 1st airport fully operating by solar power: India's Kochi airport is the world's 1st airport operated fully by solar power.
=>NCR to have air taxies: New Delhi is set to introduce an electric air taxi service by 2026 that will be able to travel from Connaught Place to Gurugram in seven minutes. InterGlobe Enterprises, the parent company of IndiGo, has partnered with Archer Aviation, a California-based electric air taxi company, to make this happen. Currently, the trip between Connaught Place and Gurugram takes 60–70 minutes.
=>Zuari Bridge, Goa(Manohar Setu): Zuari Bridge in Goa is an engineering marvel built to enhance infrastructure and connectivity in Goa. It is an eight-lane bridge that connects north to south Goa, spanning a distance of around 14 km above the Zuari River. A new section of the bridge, known as New Zuari Bridge, recently opened to the public.
=>Dwarka Expressway: India’s first-ever elevated highway is Dwarka Expressway. This part of the expressway stretches from Dwarka (Delhi) to Kherki Daula Toll Plaza (Gurgaon, Haryana). The total length of Dwarka Expressway is 29 km, out of which 18.9 km falls in Haryana, while the remaining 10.1 km is in Delhi. This section of the Dwarka expressway will make travel easier and faster between Haryana and Delhi’s IGI Airport. The travel time on the stretch is expected to be around 30 minutes.
It will have a number of underpasses, flyovers, tunnels and elevated structures. As this part is on an alternate road connecting Delhi and Gurgaon, it will cut traffic jams on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
=>Cabinet approves setting up of 3 semiconductor plants in India: The combined production of the three power plants is estimated to be 50,000 wafers per month, which translates to around 3 billion chips annually. 2 plants will be set up in Gujrat at Dholera and Sanand and rest one be in Moregaon in Asam. These plants will be a collaboration of majors from Japan And Thailand
=>Kolkata under water Metro: The East-West Metro corridor in Kolkata, including a 4.8 km stretch between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade, features a 520-metre under-river tunnel. Of the total 16.6 km length, 10.8 km is underground with the tunnel under the Hooghly River.- The Sela Tunnel is situated at an elevation of 13,000 feet and is built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at a cost of ₹825 crore. The project comprises two tunnels - Tunnel 1 is 1,003 meters long, and Tunnel 2 is a 1,595-meter twin-tube tunnel. The project also includes two roads measuring 8.6 km. The tunnel has been designed for a traffic density of 3,000 cars and 2,000 trucks per day, with a maximum speed of 80 kmph.
- The tunnel is significant as it will provide all-weather connectivity to Tawang bordering China. It will also cut down the travel time to Tawang by at least one hour, allowing faster deployment of weapons, soldiers, and equipment to forward areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).=>Boost to turn India as maritime power: Naval base Jatayu commissioned in Lakshadweep.
