Nobel prizes 2024
1)=>Medicine: the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to
Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun
for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation
This year’s Nobel Prize honors two scientists for their discovery of a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated.
2)=>Physics: has been awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”
Machine learning has long been important for research, including the sorting and analysis of vast amounts of data. John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton used tools from physics to construct methods that helped lay the foundation for today’s powerful machine learning. Machine learning based on artificial neural networks is currently revolutionizing science, engineering, and daily life.
3)=>Chemistry: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2024 was awarded to David Baker “for computational protein design” and jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”This year’s Nobel Prize laureates in chemistry have revealed proteins’ secrets through computing and artificial intelligence.
While Hassabis and Jumper successfully utilised artificial intelligence to predict the structure of almost all known proteins, Baker has learned how to master life’s building blocks and create entirely new proteins.
4)=>LiteratureL Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to South Korean authorHan Kang for her ‘intense poetic prose’ exposing the fragility of life".
5)=>Peace: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024 to Nihon Hidankyo, The grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again. The extraordinary efforts of Nihon Hidankyo and other representatives of the Hibakusha have contributed greatly to the establishment of a nuclear taboo.
6)=>Economic Sciences: The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2024 is awarded to“for studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity.”
In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank) established the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The prize is based on a donation received by the Nobel Foundation in 1968 from Sveriges Riksbank on the occasion of the bank’s 300th anniversary. The prize amount is the same as for the Nobel Prizes and is paid by the Riksbank. The first prize in economic sciences was awarded to Ragnar Frisch and Jan Tinbergen in 1969.
